In 1802 he was \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003eappointed military resident to the Marathas where he became a teacher of Hindi to new military cadets.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p2\"\u003eDuring his time in India he became fascinated by the poetry circulating orally among Indian soldiers and began recording and translating it. Much of this poetry was \u003cspan class=\"s1\"\u003eBraj court poetry of the rītikāl\u003c\/span\u003e, alongside more traditional devotional and popular poetry.
