Octavo bible from c1720 in a contemporary Scottish Herringbone binding - Volume 2 (of 2) only
Lovely octavo bible from c1720 in a contemporary Scottish Herringbone binding.
Scottish binders developed unique styles of binding during the early 1700s - evolving from this Herringbone style to the later “Scottish wheel” format (see a red Morocco pair on another post) in the mid 1700s.
This is volume 2 (of 2) only which starts at Proverbs in the Old Testament and continues to the New Testament. It maintains its nice gilt decoration and contemporary marbled end papers, as well as an early ownership inscription from 1721.
Gilt to spine, boards and edges. Binding firm and not rebacked. Bumps to corners, some wear to binding and creases and marks to pages, but generally very good condition.
