This is the official report of the geological survey of India, published in Calcutta under the authority of the Geological Survey of India. The comprehensive work was the first systematic description of the physical and economic geography of India. Meticulous in its detail, the 4-volume set gave a clear and detailed summary of the geology of India. Volumes 1 & 2 describe the Peninsular and extra-Peninsular Geology (respectively), Volume 3 the Economic Geology, and Volume 4 describes the (mainly non-economic) Mineralogy of India. The survey was fundamental in the development of mining, infrastructure, and railways in India.
