This is the first English edition of Sparrman’s celebrated account of Cook’s second voyage, with important additional zoological plates not present in the Swedish edition. A pupil of Linnaeus, Sparrman joined Johann Reinhold Forster on the Resolution (1772–75) and here provides both a naturalist’s observations and one of the earliest scientific descriptions of the Cape interior, alongside a vivid narrative of the voyage south towards the Antarctic and through the Pacific. This work is a cornerstone of South African and Pacific voyages.
