“Asia divisa nelle sue Parti secondo lo stato presente…”

Vincenzo Coronelli (1650 – 1718)

Atlante Veneto published in Venice c1690

430 x 590mm

Left hand sheet of Coronelli’s beautiful map of Asia – here in modern colour. Some water damage to upper right corner, dents to outer margins and old repairs to verso

Vincenzo Coronelli was a Franciscan Priest in Venice, and one of the most celebrated cartographers of the 17th Century. He is best known for designing and producing large globes for King Louis XVI

The map shows the East Coast of Africa, the Middle East, and India, with many placenames and an intricate coast line. However, the inland parts of modern day Russia are largely unknown.

As with many Coronelli maps, there is a particularly fine cartouche – here with a camel with a rather human like face! The Jesuits are celebrated on the map with a radiant IHS on the left hand side while the large cartouche dedicates the map to Thyrsus Gonzalez de Santalla – the 13th Superior general of the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits).
