“Bible once owned by Newton’s friend, and founder of the Royal Society of Edinburgh, the Mathematician Colin MacLaurin - with Contemporary Herringbone Binding”
The 1711 Bible itself is complete with the 1711 old testament, 1710 new testament and 1711 Psalter. The book is red ruled and in its original beautiful Scottish Herringbone binding. The book is complete but the text is in fair condition with many pages loose, including the first and last pages and the leaves for the book of Psalms. 19th Century ownership description pasted to inner edge of the title page. Boards good but bumped in corners and spine worn and creased. A “Well loved” example by several generations of the Maclaurin family.
MacLaurin was recommended to be the Professor of Mathematics at the University
of Edinburgh by his friend Sir Isaac Newton. He was a celebrated Mathematician in his own right, with several mathematical equations named after him. In later life, he founded the Royal Society of Edinburgh. This Bible has his grand-daughter’s ownership inscription to the inner board and a family tree pasted to the title page identifying Colin MacLaurin.
