"When a boat from the nearby fort or Beritoga came by to look for Staden, he told the Tupinamba that his brother was probably abroad, looking for him. The Tupinamba sent a canoe to speak to the Portuguese but when the sailors asked about Staden, they were told that they had no knowledge of him, so they went away assuming he must be dead"
