Vincenzo Coronelli was a Franciscan Priest in Venice, and one of the most celebrated cartographers of the 17th Century. He is best known for designing and producing large globes for King Louis XVI
The map shows the coast of modern day Croatia with present day Zadar and Split. The inland regions are beautifully coloured and there is an extremely elaborate cartouche surrounded by flags, cannon and interestingly a Mosque. The military theme of the cartouche reflects the limits of the Christian world and the conflict with the Muslim world to the East.
