Rare Complete set of De Bry's Petits Voyages with Parts 1 to 12 plus the Appendix Congo.

13 parts (of 13) all in first editions.

This monumental multi-part account describes Voyages of the Europeans to Asia and Africa and was published by the De Bry family across several generations between 1598 and 1628. This is the most important account of early European voyages and is abundantly illustrated. Of note, the later parts (11,12 and the appendix Congo) are particularly rare and are lacking in most sets.

In this set, parts 1-8 are in a contemporary vellum binding, parts 9 and 10 in a contemporary 14th Century Antiphonal leaf binding with Provenance from the Jesuit college in Ingolstadt, and parts 11, 12 and the Appendix Congo are bound individually in later 19th Century bindings.

The accounts include many early reports of the Dutch VOCs East Asian expansion, including the voyages of Linschoten, Houtman, Van Neck, Spilbergen, Verhoeff, De Weert and van der Hagen. African voyages are described in Parts 1, 6 and the Appendix Congo with the voyages of Lopez, De Marees and Samuel Braun. Important voyages to the Arctic include those of De Veer, Hudson and Linschoten, all of which are accompanied by important maps. An early publication of Quiros' account of the Pacific and Vespucci's "discovery" of America are also included. The Petits Voyages were published separately over several years and this set is comprised of five separately bound books.

Nearly all sets have some faults but this set is remarkably complete with 272 (of 272) plates and 16 (of 17) maps. Of note, the Supplementum to part 9 is supplied separately in German and the Map of China in part 12 is replaced with a restored English edition (from Purchas) with some facsimile. The set is missing the following: the map of nova Zemblya in part 3 and the last text page of part 12.
