-Contemporary full mottled calf, with label and gilt tooling to spine. Edges stained red.

-Includes the separately paginated 54-page Tractatus de Sacrificio Missae, added to this edition for the first time.

-Printed in Rio de Janeiro by the Impressão Régia (Regia Officina Typographica).

This is a rare early Brazilian book, printed by the Impressão Régia of Rio de Janeiro only eleven years after the establishment of the First Brazilian press in 1808.

Due to the napoleonic wars affecting Spain and Portugal, the Portuguese royal court fled  to Rio de Janeiro in 1808, transforming the intellectual and cultural life of Brazil. The Royal court establishment the Impressão Régia in Rio, marking the beginning of sustained printing in Brazil. 

The author of this work, Custódio de Faria (1761–1828), was a Portuguese-born Augustinian scholar and theologian. Born at Guimarães, he became a professor of Greek and Hebrew and subsequently settled in Rio de Janeiro, where he served as Synodal Examiner of the Diocese and taught moral theology at the Seminary of São José.

This book was compiled for the education of Brazilian school students, and is described in the title as “Juventuti Brasiliensi Primum Dicatus” (Dedicated to Brazilian youth). The work teaches theology for young students in a practical way, covering human actions and their morals.

This is a very good copy in attractive contemporary mottled calf binding, gilt-decorated spine, and red-stained edges.

Rare. Neither this 2nd edition nor the first edition are on OCLC (Worldcat). I can identify only a single institutional copy of this edition, in the Biblioteca Brasiliana Guita e José Mindlin - São Paulo Brasil.
