Cook's 2nd Voyage attempted to search the Southern seas for the fabled Southern Continent. They circumnavigated the Antarctic and demonstrated there was no inhabitable large land mass that had not yet been discovered. They failed to discover the continent of Antarctica, but this remains a landmark voyage in the exploration of the Pacific and of Antarctica.
