Have sins that need forgiving?! This is a rare indulgence from Pope Paul V, signed by Scipio Cobelluzi his cardinal. 45x25cm approx. Hand written in fine Italian script on vellum. Dated 22 August 1608.
Indulgences were a well recognised way to reduce your time in purgatory, and speed up your passage to heaven, through a payment to the church. They were popular during the Middle Ages, but became abused as a source of income by unscrupulous church members, and were a key reason for the reformation of the 16th century.
Pope Paul V is famous for his support of Galileo and for financing the completion of St Peter’s basilica in Rome.
Nice opportunity to obtain this early manuscript indulgence which is over 400 years old!
