This is a fascinating Journal and ships log written by the Liverpool seaman, John Gould, from 1852 to 1868. It covers several voyages to New Orleans and San Francisco, and a fascinating list of ships seen in Liverpool harbour from 1867-8.
The first section covers a voyage from Liverpool to New Orleans and back from December 1852 to May 1853 on the ship "Sumroo" (later shipwrecked in 1857). 23 pages describing the rigging, sails, weather and events while in New Orleans Port.
The second voyage is from Caldera (Chile?) to Liverpool between August 1852 and December 1852. 24 pages including John remarking "Better face a danger once than be always in fear".
The third voyage on the ship Cheshyre is between Liverpool and San Francisco from May 1853 to June 1853 - 6 pages
The last section is an interesting account of ships in the harbour at Liverpool including a fascinating list of all the ships towed into the port by John Gould - lots of potential to discover more about these ships - 9 pages
Contemporary Quarto Half calf with marbled boards - front board loose with corner bent. Good condition overall and would benefit from further research - a nice project for anyone with interest in shipping in the mid 19th Century - a time of transition from Sail to Steamers.
