This important voyage was the 6th recored circumnavigation of the world. The VOC had barred other enterprises from sailing through the Straits of Magellan so Schouten sailed around Cape Horn (which he named after the Dutch city) and across the Pacific to the Moluccas. The voyage was funded by the Dutch “Australische Compagnie” and one of the main purposes of the voyage was to discover Terra Australis. The ships visited many Pacific Islands, including Tonga and Papua New Guinea, but on returning via Java, Schouten was arrested by the VOC for breaking trade restrictions. Despite this, his journey was celebrated in Europe and the account was published in several editions. All early (1618/19) editions are uncommon.
