Vincenzo Coronelli was a Franciscan Priest in Venice, and one of the most celebrated cartographers of the 17th Century. He is best known for designing and producing large globes for King Louis XVI
The map itself is based on the models of Sanson and other French cartographers, but is in Cornelli’s trade mark beautiful engraving style. The cartouche is surrounded by Crocodiles, Lions, camels and an Elephant. The interior shows elephants, eagles carrying away their pray and warriors on horseback hunting lions.
