Born in the Netherlands, Linschoten left his homeland to work for the Portuguese archbishop of Goa in the 1580s. He spent several years in Goa and extensively documented the trade and life of the area. On returning, he published his account, alongside several maps, which gave the first detailed account for western readers. His account paved the way for European expansion in the East and the increase in trade which continues to this day. The account contains some of the earliest western descriptions of China and India. It is illustrated with 39 beautifully engraved plates and two maps. Rare opportunity to obtain this hugely important early travel work describing Linschoten's voyage to Goa and the Indies.
