This is a rare Madras (modern-day Chennai) printed history of the Portuguese city of Goa. The work was printed by the Gazette Press in 1831 for a subscription list of 250 subscribers. The work contains a locally produced folding map of Goa, and interestingly the list of subscribers includes eight local Indian subscribers from Bombay.
The work was written by the French Catholic missionary Denis Louis Cottineau de Kloguen who lived an itinerant life, working in Baltimore (Maryland), Goa and Bombay, where he died in 1830.
The work contains an autobiography of the author (pp1-6); a historical sketch of Goa (pp7-24); a description of the Portuguese Viceroys (pp25-50); a description of the Bishops of Goa(pp51-79); a topographical and financial description of Goa (pp80-100); a description of the religions and churches of Goa (pp101-152); and a description of the peoples of Goa (pp153-177).
The work is uncommon in commerce and OCLC states only 11 copies in institutions.
