Manuscript German Prayer Book on vellum from the c1420s - Prayers for 25 Sundays after Pentecost / Sermons of Saint Augustine of Hippo
At around 600 years old, this is a remarkably well preserved small format prayerbook on vellum. It is written in the "Batarde" script in Latin in a clean black script with rubrication. The Batarde script was a more day-to-day style that was often used in the 15th Century for more personal manuscripts. With this style of handwriting, abbreviations were often used (indicated by the flat line above letters) and the script was more fluid than older more formal scripts.
The book is by several hands and has several sections of prayers. The first part contains prayers for the 25 Sundays after Pentecost, while the second contains a list of sermons by Saint Augustine of Hippo. A list of saints is also included.
The binding is a recent 20th century creation to style with clasps.
This would have been an important everyday item for a monk in Southern Germany during the 15th Century
