This important map was published in Part 2 of De Bry's Petits Voyages - a 13 part series which comprehensively described Asia and Africa - and one of the most important travel compendiums ever published. Part 2 of De Bry's voyages described Linschoten's voyage to the East and his description of Asia.

This map was based on a larger Plancius map which drew upon Willem Lodewijcksz map of the straits of Malacca. Lodewijcksz sailed with Houtman's first voyage which established the Dutch Spice trade. They had followed Linschoten's advice and passed through the Sunda strait and Lodewijcksz's diary recorded the route and the area they visited.

The map is beautifully engraved in the typical high quality style of De Bry. Wind roses embellish the sea while an elaborate cartouche, complete with floral decorations and birds is displayed at the top right of the image. Cartouches were often used to cover unknown areas - in this case borneo - which was poorly known on its north side at this stage.

A beautiful and important map for any collector of Singapore or SE Asia maps.
