Good condition overall. Small tears in pages 1138-40 and the last index pages restored. Complete text. Lacking the 3 folding maps. Contains 21 maps in the text by Hondius after Mercator, including maps of the Americas and the polar region. This part also contains the highly important printing of the Codex Mendoza, originally commissioned for Charles V and which passed through the hands of Andre thevet before being purchased by Hakluyt in Paris. Purchas pilgrimes is one of the most important early travel collections. It was completed by Purchas after he obtained the papers of Hakluyt who had written his famous work the principal voyages . Purchas work was more complete and illustrated with charts and this famous rendition of the codex Mendoza - a huge publishing undertaking. A rare chance to obtain a single volume from this collection in original binding.
