Rare large fragment of Braun and Hogenberg’s famous “Civitates Orbis Terrarum” - “Cities of the world” - published in the 16th Century. This copy is incomplete with many plates missing, but it has 2 title pages and 22 town plans of German and polish cities - all in original stunning gold heightened colour. The 17th original binding is present but worn with the book plate of Chateau de Jury.
This famous publication was the first town book and was widely read by the well to do of Europe. It allowed readers to see Birds Eye views of all the famous cities of the world. Many images were accurate, and relied on drawings of the Dutch artist Joris Hoefnagel, who travelled to view cities. Others are based on previous images and are more fanciful. Either way, the publication was a huge success and a must have for well to do libraries of the day. Complete copies in original colour sell for 6 figures today.
