The Dawn of the Post-Colonial Pacific literary Voice: Albert Wendt’s University voice
“Experiment 10”

Published in Wellington (New Zealand)
Octavo, printed wrappers (light toning, minor wear, rust around staples), 70pp.
Published the year after Samoa’s independence in 1962, Experiment 10 marks the emergence of the post-colonial Pacific literary voice. This tenth edition of the early University literary journal includes two of Albert Wendt’s earliest poems, “The Bayonet” and “These Sea-Chained Islands”. There were limited opportunities for Pacific writers to be published at the time, so this represents an early appearance in print of Wendt while he was still a student at Victoria University of Wellington.
Albert Wendt is now regarded as a key Pacific writer of the 20th Century. Writing here from New Zealand as a Samoan, Wendt is shown developing an independent and proud Pacific voice.
