Ko te Tuarua o nga pukapuka waki
Small format: 18 x 10 cm 24 pages in 12s. Original sewed pamphlet.
Published in 1840 at Hopataone (Hobart - Australia) by R.S. Waterhouse and Bros.
This anti catholic tract was written by William Colenso in New Zealand, before being published in Sydney, and printed in Hobart. It highlights the early network of missionaries and printing presses. Many early Māori tracts were printed in Australia and the UK where infrastructure was more established and Missionary work was well funded.
Colenso had written the tract as he felt threatened by the rival
Catholic missionary Bishop Pompallier who had recently established himself nearby in New Zealand.
