"A chart of St Helena"
Linschoten - from the Itinerario of 1596
Baptista Can Doetechum
Backed on paper and with small tear to fold
Drawn by Linschoten on his voyage to Goa and published by Baptista van Doetechum in 1596 for the Itinerario. St Helena was an important “watering hole” on the voyage to Goa and was used by the Portuguese, Dutch and English to re supply sailing ships. In later days it’s most famous inhabitant was Napoleon, who was kept prisoner here after his defeat at Waterloo. This map by Linschoten shows the relief of the island when approached from different approaches.
